NIAGARA, Wis. (WTAQ) - A tire recycling company in northeast Wisconsin has agreed to pay $35,000 to settle claims that it took too many tires and ran an unlicensed facility. The DNR said American Tire and Recycling accepted more than the 33,000-plus tires for which it was licensed at its plant in Niagara. Officials said old tires were stored away from an approved area – and they were not processed in a required 4 day time period. As part of its settlement, American Tire agreed lower its tire volumes to the 33,000 limit by late June.
Authorities said the company also processed old tires at an unlicensed facility in New London before it closed in the wake of a state inspection in January. The state says tire recycling facilities must be regulated because of a fire risk, and the possible spread of mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus.
